If you enlarge the photo you'll see that the top pulley is still there, but you're on the right track. Keep guessing.

I see a bolt on the gound back there but it almost looks like a presta to shrader adaptor.
I think he broke his chain,
and was to high to remember to re-route it through the pullys when he put it back on.

No broken chain, and Soper doesn't get high. There was a loose bolt that caused the odd chain alignment.
